Battery powered speakers were that mono loudspeakers in your portable radio in 70s and 80s.
Later stereo equipment became affordable and the battery powered audio evolved further.
Nonetheless, the battery powered speakers did not have much application.
Today, these audio speakers are undergoing a serious marketing shakeup.
The reason for this are iPod, iPad, MP3 players, portable laptops and those funky iPhones.
All these devices can be boosted with USB compatible, battery powered speakers.
Battery powered speakers do not necessarily use their own battery power.
Often, these products are passive devices powered by the gadgets they serve.

There is a lot of misconception about the speaker's quality.
You cannot pump a lot of noise out of the battery powered speakers, the same way as you cannot cook your breakfast in the battery powered appliance.
However, this does not mean that portable devices cannot produce great quality sounds.
In fact, the advances in the audio technology bring amazing quality to those portable devices.
As the rule you should avoid passive stereo speakers which are powered by the parent source.
There will never be enough volume to enjoy the pair.
However, battery powered speakers which use their own power source do make a difference.
There are plenty of quality good speakers and prices are more than affordable.

It is amazing that there are now subwoofers which run for iPad, iPod, iPhone and MP3 players.

These are passive speakers which are powered from the main device.
Among the other passive battery powered speakers these units are probably the best.
They cost around $10 per pair.
However, passive devices are seldom satisfactory and you need a good reason to buy them (for example as ear pieces).
